Why does the pandit say your baby's name should start with “H”? Here's the actual system — moon signs, birth stars and syllables — explained clearly enough to follow, question, or lovingly negotiate with.

## The idea in one paragraph Vedic astrology reads the sky at the moment of birth. The rashi is the zodiac sign the moon occupied, and the nakshatra is the specific lunar mansion, one of 27 star-clusters the moon passes through each month. Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters), and every pada has an assigned sound. A name beginning with that sound is believed to keep the child's name vibrating in harmony with their birth sky.

## The rashi table If you know only the rashi, use its traditional starting-letter family. Mesha points to A, L and E sounds; Vrishabha to B, V and U; Mithuna to K, Chh and Gh; Karka to D and H; Simha to M and T; Kanya to P, Th and N; Tula to R and T; Vrischika to N and Y; Dhanu to Bh, Dh and Ph; Makara to Kh and J; Kumbha to G and S; and Meena to D, Ch and Z. These are families rather than rigid spelling rules, and regional pronunciation varies.

## Nakshatras: the finer instrument The rashi gives a letter family; the nakshatra pada gives the exact syllable. A Karka baby could start with H or D broadly, but if the moon sat in Pushya's second pada, tradition points specifically to Hi. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four sounds. ## Why the moon, not the sun? In Vedic thought the moon governs manas — the mind, moods and inner life — which is what a name is believed to address every time it is spoken.
