The word *Panchang* (पंचांग) comes from *Pancha* (five) and *Anga* (limbs). It is a five-fold astronomical calendar tracking solar and lunar positions.

## 1. Tithi (Lunar Phase Day) A Tithi is the time required for the longitudinal angle between the Sun and Moon to increase by 12 degrees. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month (15 Shuklapaksha, 15 Krishnapaksha).

## 2. Vara (Solar Weekday) The 7 days of the week, each governed by a planetary deity (e.g., Ravivara = Sun, Somavara = Moon).

## 3. Nakshatra (Lunar Asterism) The star constellation occupied by the Moon during the day.

## 4. Yoga (Combined Soli-Lunar Angle) 27 Yogas calculated from the sum of solar and lunar longitudes.

## 5. Karana (Half-Tithi) Half of a Tithi (6 degrees of angular separation). There are 11 Karanas in rotation.
