Choosing a baby name by numerology

Numerology is one of three or four things Indian families weigh when naming a child, and it is the one most likely to produce an unusable name if it is applied first. Here is the order that works.

The constraints, in the order to apply them

Most families are balancing several things at once: the nakshatra syllable from the birth star, the family's naming customs, meaning, how the name will actually be said, and the number.

Apply them in that order and numerology does its job as a filter. Apply numerology first and it becomes a generator, and generated names are how you end up with a spelling nobody can say and a meaning nobody can trace.

• 1. The nakshatra syllable, if your family follows it — it narrows the field usefully rather than destructively.

• 2. Meaning and language — a name should mean something you would be glad to explain.

• 3. Sayability — how it survives a classroom, a phone call and a form.

• 4. The number — as a filter over what survived, not as the source.

Which number to aim for

The common practice is to align the name's number with the child's Life Path or Bhagyank from the birth date, on the reasoning that the name should support the road rather than pull against it. Some families instead choose a number whose qualities they want to encourage.

Neither is a rule, and there is no number that is bad for a child. A page that tells you a 4 or an 8 will burden your child is charging you for anxiety.

The spelling trap

Because a spelling change changes a number, it is tempting to reach a target by adding letters — Aarav becomes Aaraav, Sunita becomes Suneetaa. Some of these are perfectly natural Indian spellings and some are not, and the line matters: your child will spell this name aloud several thousand times.

The practical test is whether the spelling already exists in the wild. If other people are named that way, it is a spelling. If the only reason it exists is the arithmetic, it is a construction.

And then let it go

The last thing worth saying is the thing numerology sites do not: a name that the family loves and the child grows into is a better name than one that scored well. The tradition is a way of thinking about the choice. It was never meant to make it for you.
