Name correction: what it can and cannot do

Name correction is the highest-value service in Indian numerology and the one where the gap between what is claimed and what is defensible is widest. This page is about that gap.

What a correction does

It changes a number. Rajiv is a 6 and Rajeev is a 7, because the letters differ and the letters carry values. That is the entire mechanism, and it is not in dispute.

The tradition's claim is that a name whose number aligns with the birth date sits more comfortably with the person carrying it. That is an interpretive claim about fit, and it is the strongest version of the case.

What it does not do

It does not change income, health, marriage prospects or examination results, and no tradition of numerology claims a mechanism by which it would. Anyone promising a specific outcome — particularly for a fee, particularly urgently — has left the tradition they are citing.

The tell is specificity in the promise combined with vagueness in the method. A practitioner who says 'this spelling reaches 5, which the tradition associates with trade' is being straight with you. One who says 'this spelling will grow your business by Diwali' is not.

The practical costs nobody mentions

A changed spelling has to be lived with. It appears on documents you may or may not change, in the mouths of people who have used the old one for decades, in every form and every introduction. Partial adoption — new spelling socially, old one legally — is what most people actually end up with, and it is worth deciding on deliberately rather than drifting into it.

Most people who are content with a correction made a small one: a doubled letter, a swapped vowel. Large changes are where the regret concentrates.
